Man Pleads Guilty to Possession of a Prohibited Weapon

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A man who led police on a high-speed chase with his children in his car has been jailed after pleading guilty to possession of a prohibited weapon. 

Raheem Walkes, 26, crashed his Nissan Note into a sport utility vehicle while running from police officers, who attempted to stop him at Bahama Avenue, on November 27.

After the collision, Walkes ran from the vehicle. He was caught and brought back to the car, where police officers found an AR-15 assault rifle.

Walkes pleaded guilty to possession of a prohibited weapon at his arraignment before Magistrate Kendra Kelly.

He was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and fined $10,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in Walkes spending an additional year in prison.

 Defense lawyer Tony Scriven told the court that Walkes’ children, ages three and eight, were traumatized by the incident.

The magistrate told Walkes that he was supposed to be his children’s protector, but he endangered their lives by exposing them to a firearm and taking police on a chase.
