NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The show began with The Bahamas All-star band putting on a performance for the ages. There was also a march pass by the athletes from each participating island.

Prime Minister Philip Davis officially opened the games, which had a 20-year hiatus.

He told those gathered that he has already sought cabinet approval to rename the games the Peter Bethell Bahamas Games. We asked the prime minister about the games returning after such a long time.

Three of the Golden Girls were also on hand for the opening – Pauline Davis, Chandra Stirrup and Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie.

Ferguson McKenzie, a former participant, says she’s proud to see the games return.

Performing during the cultural segment was popular artist Bishop Lawrence Rolle otherwise known as the ‘Singing Bishop’.

He spoke to us prior to his performance noting that Bahamians have so much to be grateful for.

The games will continue through the Independence holiday up to July 15th.
