NASSAU, BAHAMAS – For many passengers, what should have been the start of a smooth journey quickly turned into hours of waiting, uncertainty and frustration on Thursday morning.

In a statement, Bahamasair explained that an early morning power outage at Lynden Pindling International Airport caused an internet disruption that temporarily impacted its ability to check in passengers traveling on international flights to Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.

A social media video obtained by Our News shows lines stretching throughout the terminal, as hundreds of passengers waited while airline staff worked to restore service.

Some stood shoulder to shoulder with luggage in hand, others watched the clock, hoping they wouldn’t miss their flights.

Vice President of Marketing and Commercial Development at Nassau Airport Development, Jan Knowles, told us in a voice note that, “the airport operated on generator power for several hours before commercial power was restored shortly after 8:00AM. While the majority of our airline carriers were able to check in passengers, some airlines experienced delays.”

However, Knowles says despite the power disruption, passenger screening and security operations continued, allowing flights to keep moving through the airport as staff worked to assist travelers.

“At this time, flights are arriving and departing from LPIA. Passengers are encouraged to contact their airline directly for the latest flight information as some airlines may still be experiencing delays due to the disruption.

“NAD’s operations, maintenance and guest services teams continue to monitor the situation and are assisting passengers throughout the terminals as needed.”

However, the delays weren’t limited to Bahamasair passengers.

The disruption rippled across the terminal, affecting travelers on other airlines as well, including one passenger who says the delays caused him to miss his flight despite arriving at the airport two hours before departure.
