KINGSTON, JAMAICA – Chaos Monday morning in Jamaica as a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck the country near the area of New Kingston.

The quake according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center occurred at a depth of 17 kilometers or 10.56 miles.

Videos coming out of Jamaica show food stores with items thrown about, extensive street and home damage, boulders blocking roads, as well as university students running out of buildings as they evacuated.

Stephen Smith a Bahamian student was at the University of the West Indies campus in Kingston when the quake struck.

Smith also serves as President of the Bahamian Students Association. Up to the time we spoke, he says students in the dorm were all accounted for.

Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell telling parliament today he is in communication with Jamaica’s Honor Council Alveta Knight.
