MINNESOTA , UNITED STATES – There were more podium finishes from the NCAA Indoor Conference Championships, featuring medals and national rankings.
It was a deep Bahamian contingent at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Championships.
Headlining that list, Northern State’s Jayden Munroe who won the conference title in the long jump with his mark of 7.44 meters.
It was a new school record, a provisional mark for nationals and now ranks ninth in the nation.
Also at the meet was Mt. Mary’s Marauders’, Kenny Moxey Jr. who closed out the meet with the title in the heptathlon.
After holding the lead from day one, Moxey won the 60-meter hurdles on the final day and finished with 5,252 points, breaking his own school record and is now ranked fifth in the nation.
Marauders teammate, Laila Cleare was second in the 60 meters at 7.43 seconds and second in the 200 meters in 24.54 seconds, both personal bests.
At the Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Championships, Stephanique Dean finished second in the 200 meter in 24.61 seconds.
NJCAA Basketball
Leano Rolle is having a breakout season and is peaking at the right time headed into March.
Rolle and his Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears ended the regular season in dramatic fashion last night with an 87-86 win over Jones College.
With the win, the Bears clinched the No. 2 seed in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament.
Southwest closed the year 16-14 overall and 10-4 in conference play.
The sophomore from Bimini averaged just over 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals per game this season while shooting better than 50 percent from the field, stretching the floor at nearly 36 percent from three.
Rolle is playing his best basketball headed into the postseason and helped the Bears clinch the first-round bye in the upcoming tournament.
He had a team-high 23 points to clinch that bye with an 81-64 win over Meridian — including his own 7-0 run when the Bears trailed by eight.
The 6-foot-7 wing is emerging as one of the nation’s top junior college recruits and is ranked No. 60 on the JUCO Top 100 Recruit List.
As a freshman, Rolle played for Arizona Western College, where he averaged 6.4 points per game.
Rolle’s play this season and his JUCO ranking have drawn attention from NCAA Division I programs, and he has official offers from the Florida State Seminoles and Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.
Rowing
Rowing is one of the fastest growing youth sports in the country and continues to set milestones on the international stage.
The Nassau Rowing Club delivered a series of impressive performances at the Sarasota Invitational Regatta in Florida with silver in the boys’ novice coxed fours and the novice eights.
Racing at Nathan Benderson Park, North America’s only Class A rowing venue capable of hosting international regattas, the team competed against 823 crews from 71 programs across 75 major events.
Windsor School also fielded eight athletes across seven crews in four events.
Next up, the scene shifts locally to the New Providence Community Regatta on March 21.
Mingoes Basketball
Kevaro Russell scored a game-high 32 points to power the University of The Bahamas to a dominant 91-60 victory over the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services Challengers in UB Showcase Series action at the Kendal Isaacs Gym.
The Mingoes never trailed in the wire-to-wire win.
The Mingoes’ supporting cast was just as effective as Terrance Higgs delivered 24 points on an efficient 11-of-14 shooting night.
John McKenzie added 12 points and Jarius Hall chipped in with 10 to round out a balanced attack.
By the end of the third, UB had stretched the margin to 64-45, and from there it was all about closing strong.
For the Challengers, Don Hanna Jr. led the way with nine points, while Patrick Brice, Rashaad Woodside, Jayden Stubbs and Jude Rolle each finished with six in the loss.
