Bahamians Studying In U.S. Concerned Over Election Results

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Millions of Americans headed to the polls today to decide who will take the country forward for the next four years in a historic election.

Amid all the anxiousness are thousands of Bahamian students taking it all in.

Reagan Russell is a senior at Howard University in Washington D.C. The HBCU is Vice President Kamala Harris alma mater and her campaign headqUarters has been set up there.

“It’s a bunch of security around the area so I know the secret service is probably already roaming the streets around my dorm and where I live,” she said.

“Campus is actually blocked off right now so I can’t even go to the yard which is our main gathering spot where she’s holding her headquarters for tonight.”

Russell is also a first-time voter there. She says while the energy is high, many have safety concerns, fearful of a repeat of January 6th.

Former Our News intern Philena Styles is at Georgia State University in Atlanta and Marcus Morris is at Midwestern State University in Texas.

They say there’s similar concerns in their city.

“They are concerned that if this person wins then that means that my rights will be taken away or if this person wins then I will not be able to live the life that i want to love so that’s really whats going on here,” Morris said.

Philena told us she is a bit nervous about what the reaction will be.

“But being in the city, I feel like its mostly an urban area so I feel like i will be safe but I do feel like in Georgia which is a little farther out may be a little more scarey,” she said.
