ELEUTHERA, BAHAMAS – Who could forget last summer when Eleuthera residents didn’t hold back as they expressed their frustration with power cuts that in some cases lasted for days.

It sparked protests and criticism.

Eleuthera had been facing frequent power outages during the hottest months of the year, causing frustration among residents who say their utility issues have been overlooked for too long.

Officials said the increased demand  was due to continued economic growth on the island, combined with bpl’s aged infrastructure.

Bahamas Power & Light CEO Toni Seymour addressed the frustrations at Eleuthera Business Outlook saying the issues didn’t happen overnight and will not be fixed overnight.

So what have BPL and the government been doing to address the long-standing issue?

Last summer Energy Minister JoBeth Coleby-Davis announced a 50% rebate for Bahamas Power and Light customers on the island.

It was also announced that Eleuthera would receive an additional 16 megawatts of generation capacity to address a generation shortfall.

And in January BPL said  they were using the winter months to prepare for the summer demand which see’s a spike in power consumption by residents.

Seymour says the work to better the power grid hasn’t stopped.

She says while there’s still work to do to ensure what residents experienced last summer is not repeated, she insists a lot has already been done.
