BPSU President: “Issues Don’t Have Colors They Have Particulars”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – What was supposed to be a routine union meeting, turned into a political theatre on Monday, after rumors of major industrial action circulated less than 24 hours before the 2026 General Election.

However, Bahamas Public Services Union Leader, Kimsley Ferguson, clarifies that it was only a meeting.

“So that we can get a yay or nay from the membership, and so had we got it earlier, we would’ve done this prior to then, but we got it on Friday afternoon. I traveled on Friday and Saturday and so hence I need a position to be taken by our membership this morning, and that I mean this afternoon in that regard. “

The proposes meeting dates back to ongoing negotiations over an industrial agreement between the union and government, where the last update was earlier this year in a public back and forth over a technical issue.

Screenshots circulating on WhatsApp shows Free National Movement Chairman, Dr. Duane Sands, encouraging FNM’s to show up to the meeting in plain clothes.

Despite this, Sands denies the FNM organized the protest, saying he was only received news of a possible demonstration, but Ferguson put it this way:

“Let me invite all sides. I don’t need to say PLP or FNM because I represent both PLP’s, FNM’s and COI’s, so all…please come to the meeting this evening before you go to your various rallies, and let’s discuss what the government has proposed so you can either be pleased or displeased, and apply yourself as you wish.”

Unions often get a bad reputation for protesting during election season, but however Ferguson says this:

“I’ve been sitting in this chair for nine years, and when previous administration misbehave I dealt with them…no difference between the PLP and the FNM.”

“I don’t even think that that taking that form of action makes any sense because we want Bahamians to exercise their democratic right as citizens….”
