Catholic School Observes Ash Wednesday

NASSAU , THE BAHAMAS – Christians around the world observed Ash Wednesday, which is observed on the Christian calendar as the start of the Lent season.

For centuries worshippers have observed the day with special services, where ashes are placed foreheads in the shape of a cross.

Despite the development of the modern church, this practice has remained sacred.

Our Denielle Miller visited a few services today, here’s a look at what she found at one church school.

“Christians around the world recognize today as Ash Wednesday. It’s a time of prayer and fasting it also signals the beginning of Lent. The ceremonial practices deeply rooted in theology and the traditions being passed on to the next generation. “

For the next forty days, Christians will embark on a spiritual pilgrimage, replicating the journey of Jesus during his last days on earth including his wilderness experience.

It also signifies a period of fasting , praying and reflection.

However, these rituals are not isolated to adults, children are also taught to continue in these traditions.

At St. Francis and Joseph Catholic Church on Wednesday, the sanctuary was filled with melodious hymns led by the students of St. Francis and Joseph Primary School, in observance of their Ash Wednesday mass.

The service was officiated by Catholic Diocese Priest Father, Noel Clarke. The homily was delivered by Deacon Ricardo Demeritte, who quized the students on their knowledge of the solemn day.

Passing with flyer colors, Principal of the school, Jacinteha Goffe, said the religious teachers are to be applauded.

“Our religion coordinator is Ms.Brathwaite and she along with other teachers they just do an excellent job of teaching them the meaning of what it is we do.”

Fifth grader, Ezyn barr and sixth grader, J’kia Moxey shared with me what they were taught.
