NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Under the theme “Celebrating a Decade of Hope, Resilience, and Healing,” the Public Hospitals Authority hosted an official ceremony to commemorate the important milestone.

Among those in attendance were government officials, members of Robert Smith’s family, healthcare professionals, and invited guests.

The facility was officially commissioned by the Christie administration in June 2016.

Situated on 5.2 acres, the complex provides a therapeutic environment designed to treat and support children and adolescents living with neurodevelopmental disorders, psychological trauma and severe behavioral challenges.

Clinical director of the complex, Dr. Annalease Richards, reflected on the long standing contributions of child and adolescent psychiatry services in The Bahamas.

“Today we recognize and celebrate the blessing of a space, but I think it is as equally important to recognize and celebrate the service of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry which has provided care to children and adolescents and clients with developmental disabilities in this country for over 30 years.”

Meanwhile, PHA Managing Director Dr. Aubynette Rolle described the complex as a beacon of hope for some of the nation’s most vulnerable, resilient, young people.

“This building is not merely a structure brick, mortar, windows and doors, but it is as what we describe as the breath of life to walls, and walls only exist and become functional where people exist.”

“To the core child and adolescent and Robert Smith ward team, our gifted and dedicated physicians, nursing staff, social workers, phycologist, recreational therapist, occupational therapist, techs, academic students, you are the heartbeat of this complex.”

Following the ceremony, officials unveiled the facility’s newest addition – a library designed to support learning, growth and development for its young clients.
