NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Former NFL star Herschel Walker addressed the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Thursday, emphasizing China’s growing influence in the Caribbean and the rising drug smuggling threat in the Bahamas, issues he hopes to tackle if confirmed as U.S. ambassador.

Walker stressed the importance of having an ambassador in place, noting that the Bahamas has not had one since 2011.

“China is trying to increase its influence in the region. It built nearly a $3 billion deep-water port in the Bahamas and has made other moves that could threaten our national security. There is also a rise in drug smuggling there, which poses a real danger to the United States. Tackling this problem requires leadership and cooperation between our governments.”

He also praised the work of Operation Bahamas Turks and Caicos in disrupting illegal trafficking in the northern Caribbean.

Appointed by former President Donald Trump in December 2024 after losing a 2022 Georgia Senate bid, Walker says he will encourage greater U.S. investment in the Bahamas if confirmed.

“If confirmed, I will advise the American business community on trade and investment opportunities in the Bahamas. I will also ensure the Bahamian government fosters a welcoming environment for U.S. investment to advance America’s prosperity. As ambassador, I will work to build lasting relationships with the Bahamian-American community in the United States.”

Walker also highlighted his personal drive and work ethic as qualifications for the role.

“Those who don’t know me may wonder what qualifications I bring to serve as U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas. Throughout my life, I’ve been underestimated in academics, athletics, and business, but I’ve always proven people wrong through discipline, determination, and hard work. No one has ever questioned my work ethic. If confirmed, I will apply the same ethic to serving this country.”
