NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Chinese Ambassador to The Bahamas, Yan Jiarong, says The Bahamas shouldn’t worry about the ongoing trade war between China and the United States.

Despite a turbulent year with heavy tariffs imposed by both superpowers, Ambassador Jiarong expresses optimism, noting that China sees the diversification of The Bahamas’ trade partners as a positive development.

“And why I’m optimistic is because I do see efforts by The Bahamas to diversify your trading partners and diversify your partners in terms of investments, trade, and everything else, and China, like I said, just wants to be one of your multiple partners.”

The ambassador also emphasized that the embassy is working to foster this partnership through international collaborations, ambassador visits, and increased Bahamian trips to China to establish stronger business relationships.

“I do see that more and more Bahamian entrepreneurs are willing to go to China to establish this kind of cooperation/relationship with Chinese entrepreneurs. I was told that every year around 100 Bahamian entrepreneurs go to China to talk with Chinese entrepreneurs, new partners, and attend all kinds of expos.”

Ambassador Jiarong envisions greater direct trade between the two nations, including Bahamian products like lobster, rum, and handicrafts finding a market in China.

“I think the Chinese people will love Bahamian lobsters, rums, and handicrafts. There are really very good quality, high-quality, and well-known products. I think that with joint efforts, our two sides, I hope the Bahamian products—your lobsters, your rums, and your handicrafts and your conchs—can find a better market in China.”
