Christian Council: We Only Support Medical Cannabis, Not the Entire Bill

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The groundbreaking legislation that will create a controlled system for cannabis use for medical and religious purposes is still facing opposition from The Christian Council. Tonight the BCC’s President Bishop Delton Fernander is clarifying the council’s position.

The Bahama’s Christian Council wants to make it abundantly clear they only support the medicinal use of cannabis.

It comes less than 24 hours after the parliament passed a compendium of groundbreaking legislation to create a controlled system for cannabis use for medical and religious purposes.

As he led the debate on the cannabis-related bills, health and wellness minister Dr. Michael Darville said he met with The Christian Council.

Council President Bishop Delton Fernander says it seems another impression was given.

The bills will remove cannabis from the list of dangerous drugs and allow for the expungement of records for individuals convicted of the possession of 30 grams of or less of marijuana.

In a statement on Wednesday, Darville assured the public that the legislation includes strict regulations and controls to ensure the medical cannabis is used responsibly and safely.

Dr. Darville said medical cannabis will not be used for children, teenagers, and pregnant women except for in special situations.

Fernander believes the bill will worsen the current fight with social ills.
