NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Commonwealth Brewery Limited (CBL) is proud to announce the launch of a dynamic portfolio of South African wines and cider in The Bahamas, following a global partnership between its parent company, Heineken N.V., and Distell, one of South Africa’s premier producers and marketers of wines, spirits, and ciders.

The introduction of the Distell portfolio marks a significant milestone in CBL’s beverage strategy, expanding its offerings beyond beer and spirits and introducing a fresh, diverse range of wines tailored to the evolving preferences of Bahamian consumers.

The collaboration was made possible through Heineken’s 2021 acquisition of a majority stake in Distell, a transaction finalized in 2023. As a result, CBL, Heineken’s operating company in The Bahamas was officially appointed as the exclusive distributor of Distell’s wine and cider brands in 2024.

“This is more than a portfolio launch, it’s a bold step in redefining our role as a full-spectrum beverage company,” said Andre Woldt, Marketing Director at Commonwealth Brewery Limited. “We’re excited to bring world-class South African wines and premium cider to the Bahamian market, offering something new, inclusive, and globally recognized.”

The portfolio features a vibrant mix of everyday wines and premium labels, thoughtfully selected based on local consumer insights and international acclaim. Among the offerings is Obikwa, a youthful and approachable wine perfect for everyday enjoyment, and 4th Street, South Africa’s most beloved wine brand known for its easy-drinking appeal at social gatherings. Nederburg, one of the country’s most awarded wineries, brings a legacy of excellence, while Durbanville Hills delivers premium wines influenced by coastal terroir, with a standout Sauvignon Blanc. The collection also includes Chamdor, a non-alcoholic sparkling wine that provides an inclusive option for celebratory moments, and Savanna Premium Cider, the world’s number one cider brand, offering a crisp, refreshing alternative for modern consumers. Varietals include internationally acclaimed Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chenin Blanc, known for their complexity, flavor depth, and outstanding value.

“South African wines offer a unique balance of ripe fruit flavors and natural acidity, thanks to the region’s Mediterranean-like climate,” noted Densil Deveaux, Senior Portfolio Manager for Wines & Spirits at CBL. “This climate, paired with centuries of winemaking tradition, creates wines that stand out globally, and now, locally.”

The portfolio is designed to be accessible to a wide range of consumers, from casual wine lovers to seasoned connoisseurs. The full range of wines and Savanna Cider will be available at 700 Wines & Spirits retail locations throughout The Bahamas.

CBL also plans to host tastings and promotional events across the islands to introduce the new wines to the public.

This launch is a direct response to changing market dynamics and consumer preferences in The Bahamas. By entering the premium wine and cider categories, CBL is expanding its relevance and reach in the local beverage market.

“The addition of the Distell portfolio supports our long-term strategy to innovate, diversify, and lead in multiple beverage categories,” added Andre Woldt. “Our goal is to deliver exceptional drinking experiences to every Bahamian consumer, and this portfolio helps us do just that.”

With this launch, Commonwealth Brewery Limited reaffirms its commitment to innovation, consumer choice, and global beverage excellence. The introduction of the Distell South African wine and cider portfolio not only enriches the local market with new flavor experiences but also signals CBL’s continued dedication to evolving with its customers and delivering world-class products. As the Bahamian palate becomes increasingly diverse and adventurous, CBL is proud to lead the way, one bottle at a time.
