NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A man who was previously handed a life sentence for killing a man as a teen was given a second chance at a resentencing hearing.

Jerome Francois was just 15 years old when he killed Manes Saint-Ilien and buried his body on a beach in Eight Mile Rock, Grand Bahama.

Originally charged with murder, Francois, who has a history of mental illness, pleaded guilty to manslaughter by provocation in 2010 and he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Almost 15 years later, Francois was back in court for a resentencing hearing after the Court of Appeal quashed his life sentence.

Justice Andrew Forbes ordered that Francois serve five more years in prison.

Upon his release, Francois will be on probation for three years and is required to attend a psychiatric clinic each month. A breach of probation will send Francois back to prison for a year.
