Crop Over 2026: Generating Big Business

BARBADOS – Barbados’ Crop Over festival continues to drive tourism spending, giving local entrepreneurs and small businesses valuable exposure and increased sales.

BARBADOS – Barbados generates more than $1 billion annually in direct on-island spending from long-stay tourists.

Officials say one of the busiest seasons for visitors is during Crop Over, the island’s signature summer festival.

The celebration features a calendar of events spanning several days, culminating in the island’s massive street parade, Kadooment Day.

Guests, including myself, often stay on the island for a week or longer. As a result, local businesses such as taxi drivers, rental property owners, promoters, and restaurants experience a direct economic impact.

“Tomorrow. That will make my third day. You know Jesus rose on the third day, so three times a charm. And then I ga want come back Monday. That’s Jump Up Day. How much will I have to pay y’all to open on Jump Up Day? Well, not me, the station.”

To support these entrepreneurs, the National Cultural Foundation hosts the Bridgetown Market, an open-air marketplace featuring native pastries, crafts, and jewelry, all made by local Bajans.

One of this year’s vendors is Catherine Rochford, owner of Catherine Rochford Designs.

“Would you say that a lot of people are introduced to your products during this season?”

“Always, always, yes. I go to certain events. I don’t do all the pop-ups anymore because I have the store. But yeah, when people see my work, they actually appreciate the fact that it’s handmade.”

Then there’s Native Caribbean Scents.

Owner of the perfume house, Tamar Gibson, says the business receives significant exposure thanks to its collaboration with Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. and its prime location.

This success is also reflected in the company’s social media engagement. Gibson says sales continue to flourish even outside of the island’s busiest season.

“We can ship to 220 countries. We’ve shipped our products as far as Thailand, and basically those platforms have given us a lot of exposure over the last two years. We’ve moved from over 7,000 followers to over 18,000 within a year and a half, organically. Nothing paid, nothing bought.”
