NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Hundreds of Free National Movement (FNM) supporters packed the Atlantis Resort’s Imperial Ballroom tonight for the start of the party’s three-day convention.

Delegates flew in this morning from family islands for the much-anticipated event. This is the first national convention to be held during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Berthony McDermott has the latest.

From socially-distant seating to hand sanitization stations and temperature checks organizers of the FNM’S national convention say a lot has gone into preventing it from becoming a super spreader event.

Convention Co-chair Ethan Adderley says there are even vaccination and COVID testing requirements for all attendees.

The convention, which begins Wednesday and ends on Friday, is being held in the Grand Ballroom at Atlantis, Paradise Island.

It was originally slated to be a virtual event until the Ministry of Health gave the okay for an in-person event as COVID-19 cases decline.

Adderley also says that the facility was the only one that could accommodate party members and allow for compliance with the COVID-19 health rules as 495 delegates are expected to attend daily.

Adderley says nightly sessions will be open to the public and will feature senior members of the party as keynote speakers.
