NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Hurricanes are unique among natural disasters because they give advance warning, and the best protection is preparation.

Start by ensuring each household member has at least five gallons of water, stock up on non-perishable food, batteries, flashlights, a first-aid kit, essential medications, and keep important documents in waterproof bags, or even secure photos in the cloud.

Protect your home by boarding windows, securing doors, tying down loose outdoor items, and checking your roof.

Have an evacuation plan, know your nearest shelter, keep your car’s gas tank full, and plan for pets, since not all shelters accept them.

Stay informed by charging phones and keeping a battery-powered radio handy. The National Emergency Management Agency urges everyone to heed warnings and avoid risks; even if Erin isn’t an immediate threat, preparing now can make all the difference.
