GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – East Grand Bahama Member of Parliament Kwasi Thompson says the process to determine if water rates increase in Grand Bahama needs to be fair and done by an independent body.

In a statement, Thompson said the Grand Bahama Utility Company is an affiliate company of the Grand Bahama Port Authority.

As a result, he says it’s impossible for the GBPA to act as a regulator of itself.

In a statement, the GBPA said it’s committed to a fair and transparent process.

But, Thompson believes if there’s a rate increase, it must first be approved by the government which is accountable to the Bahamian people.

The former state finance minister says the government must step in.
