Education Director: The Ministry Is Distraught, This Hurt Us To The Core

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Bahamians around the country still dealing with the shocking death of 12-year-old Adriel Moxey.

The pre-teen was found dead in bushes just feet away from her home on Wednesday. Police say she was wearing only a shirt and had a White cloth tied around her neck.

The tragic incident was horrifying for the nation leaving many asking, “how could this have possibly happened?”

Among those raising questions, is Education Director Dominique McCartney-Russell.

“To be quite honest with you , I was distraught, this one hurt to the core,” she said.

“This hurt to the core because these are our children. I am the director of education, but I consider all the children in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas whom I’m responsible for my children. And so we were praying that we would find her. When I looked at her she’s a tiny little thing and I just, and yinno a tiny little baby and so I was very distraught.”

Russell, visited Anatol Rodgers High School the morning following the discovery, the institution Adriel attended.

She says those affected received professional counseling.

The incident, leading social media users to chastise parents for allowing children to walk home alone after school.

The education director making it clear, that her encouragement to parents is in no way belittling Adriel’s mother’s efforts but she has this word of caution.

“If children have to walk home that they should walk home, that they should walk home in groups,” McCartney-Russell.

“They should not walk home by themselves. And you know time change and so because of that it gets darker quicker. And although our after school programs may end at 4, yinno sometimes like you said parents have to work. So they have to ensure that a responsible adult is able to come and either pick up their child or the children walk in groups.”
