UNITED STATES – Energy and food costs surged in December, pushing U.S. inflation higher and challenging efforts to stabilize prices, according to new numbers.

The Labor Department reported a 2.9% increase in overall prices compared to a year earlier, up from 2.7% in November.

Energy prices accounted for over 40% of the rise, with egg prices skyrocketing 36% due to Bird Flu-induced shortages.
