NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Relatives of Aljaron Stubbs claim they were turned away from the morgue Friday morning while trying to identify his body, leaving them frustrated, emotional and demanding answers.

“ We came here this morning to identify his body, and instead of the lady behind there assist us, she left us hanging and called the security.”

23-year-old Aljaron Stubbs was fatally shot outside his Elizabeth Estates home on Thursday afternoon after police say gunmen opened fire on a silver Suzuki Wagon he was driving along Barbados Street.

Investigators say Stubbs attempted to flee but crashed into a residence a short distance away.

His sister Shandia Russell says they were told they couldn’t view her brother’s body because she didn’t have the required documents.

“ What all documents were they requiring? They require birth certificate along with the NIB. We have the NIB, we just didn’t have the birth certificate. Then they say, “okay, the passport.” The court have the passport ’cause he just came from court yesterday when they follow him and shoot him up.”

According to the family, they did not have access to those documents at the time, as some of his personal items were tied to recent court matters.

Meantime, Stubbs’ mother, an employee at the Princess Margret Hospital, who did not want to be on camera, is still coming to terms with her son’s death, describing the experience as deeply hurtful.

“ …We didn’t have his birth certificate at all. We only had his National Insurance Card. I have my ID…and I know the people, they could’ve let me seen him, you know? So I felt, very bad.”

Also speaking out was Stubbs’ girlfriend, who was in the vehicle when the shooting occurred, suffering a gunshot wound to her back.

She described the attack as traumatizing, saying she watched helplessly as gunfire erupted around them.

“ He tried to speed off, but where the car was stalling, it couldn’t move. You understand me? And that’s what happened. So I don’t think I’ll ever be the same. That really was very traumatizing.”

The young woman is also pushing back against what she described as public misperceptions about Stubbs.
