GRAND BAHAMA – A Grand Bahama family is searching for answers after a deadly shooting in the Hunters community claimed the life of a 44-year-old man.

Police have since taken two 34-year-old men into custody in connection with the incident, but for those who knew the victim best, questions remain, as they say he was a hardworking, well-respected man who didn’t deserve to die.

The Hunters community was left in shock on Friday night after gunfire erupted outside a local business establishment.

Police said just before 9 p.m. officers responded to reports of a shooting and found 44-year-old Stafford Ferguson lying near his vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was rushed to hospital, but despite efforts to save his life, he died.

Investigators believe that Ferguson was walking toward his car when he was approached by a gunman who opened fire before fleeing the area.

Now, as police continue their investigation, family members are left grieving a loss they say makes no sense.

His brother, Cambrel Ferguson, said the location where Stafford was killed was one of his regular stops, leaving the family to wonder whether someone had been watching his movements.

He adds that Stafford was a pleasant person, known for his skills as a body repairman on the island and his easygoing nature.

Those sentiments are shared by business owner Steven Marshall, who says Ferguson worked at his car lot for more than a decade before leaving. But just one week ago, he asked if he could work on a car at the lot, and Marshall agreed.

And since the shooting, rumors have circulated in the community suggesting the incident may have stemmed from a dispute over recent work performed on a vehicle.

However, police have not identified a motive in the case.

Meanwhile, the victim’s brother is thanking the community for its outpouring of support, including those who stood by his side in his final hours.
