NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Family Islands could soon see commercial banks again beginning in Exuma. The area member of parliament and investments minister says the plan is for one commercial bank to alleviate the vexing issue soon.

Deputy Prime Minister and area Member of Parliament Chester Cooper made the revelation as he contributed to the budget debate.

This issue of banks in the Family Islands has been a vexing one for years as family islanders complain of having to travel to New Providence just to access their funds.

As Cooper explains, Exuma is just the beginning.

In the meantime, Cooper says long islanders will be serviced through the Exuma Fidelity Branch.

In recent years, other commercial banks have been pulling out of the Family Islands.

Cooper sought to make it clear that this isn’t something that can be allowed to go un addressed.

He says the hope is that it will spread to the other islands that find themselves in this situation.
