ABACO, BAHAMAS – As Tropical Depression Nine moves closer to the Northwest Bahamas, storm preparation is top of mind for many Abaco residents.

At Maxwell’s, one of the island’s busiest grocery stores, shoppers say they’re stocking up early.

Rayanne Malone-Sawyer – Resident

“ It’s supposed to be something minor, so we’re just preparing by getting some…groceries, water…just the basic necessities, nothing too major,” she said.

While shoppers packed carts, store managers at Maxwell say they’ve been bracing for the rush.

Rochelle Lightbourn – Store Manager, Maxwell’s

“ We knew, you know, this is the time of the year that we have these [kinds] of things, so we always try to bulk up on our orders and stuff, so we are well stocked right at the moment. It started from Thursday,” she says.

The tropical system is forecasted to bring between four to eight inches of rain across the Central and Southeast Bahamas, with some areas seeing up to ten inches, which is a major concern for this resident.

Tyler Sawyer – Resident, Cherokee Sounds, Abaco

After experiencing Hurricane Dorian back 2019, these residents say preparation is key:

Shekera Hall – Resident, Abaco

“ Dorian was a real lesson for us, so this storm, this storm coming here, everyone should be…well aware and well-prepared for this…We thought Dorian would’ve been just a tropical, a regular storm, but it didn’t turn out that way. So still…[take caution].

Martin Bootle – Resident, Abaco

“ It was a lot…some people still traumatized…some of the people who went in never came back, you know, but…[they’re used] to hurricane around here, you know?
