NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Free National Movement (FNM) has set April 30, 2027 as the deadline for its next party convention, setting the stage for a leadership contest following its defeat in the May 2026 General Election.

The party’s Central Council approved the deadline, with current Deputy Leader Shanendon Cartwright and former NBA champion turned FNM Senator Rick Fox already declaring their intentions to contest the top post.

The FNM secured just eight seats in the May election, losing to the Progressive Liberal Party. It was just one seat more than it won in 2021.

The defeat has fueled questions about the party’s future and calls for current leader Michael Pintard to step aside.

FNM Chairman Dr. Duane Sands says the convention will reflect the party’s democratic process, giving members an opportunity to determine its leadership and direction moving forward.
