HAITI – Haiti’s transition council, established last week amidst political turmoil has appointed former Senate President Edgard Leblanc, as its leader. This move aims to restore security amid escalating violence.

The council, consisting of seven voting members and two observers, selected Leblanc with four votes. Fritz Belizaire, former Youth and Sports minister, is also tapped as Prime Minister.

These nominations, however, must be confirmed by Haiti’s National Gazette. The country’s constitution mandates a new President by Feb. 7, 2026.

Michel Patrick Boisvert, who served as Finance Minister under former Prime Minister Ariel Henry, has been filling the role on an interim basis.
