NASSAU, BAHAMAS – In a dramatic turn of events, former Police Staff Association Chairman ASP Sonny Miller is remanded to prison after the conviction of multiple drug trafficking offenses.

Jerome Sawyer reports.

Acting Assistant Chief Magistrate Shaka Serville delivered the verdict, finding Miller guilty on ten counts related to a significant drug seizure in Acklins back in June 2022.

ASP Sonny Miller – who also served as Police Staff Association Chairman, was out on bail pending his trial, showed his disappointment as he shook his head when the verdict was read. He faces serious charges, including possession of marijuana and cocaine with intent to supply, as well as conspiracy and importation of drugs.

He’ll return to court for sentencing on February 24.

At the time of his arrest, Miller was in charge of police operations in Acklins, Crooked Island, and Long Cay.

Testimony from two Colombian pilots, Cristhian Aristi-Zabal and Cristhian Aragon, revealed that Miller helped them offload drugs into a police jeep.

Things took a turn when a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter arrived on the scene.

In a twist, Miller pulled his gun on the pilots and arrested them.

Footage from the helicopter supported their story, showing all three men moving bundles from the plane to the police vehicle just before law enforcement arrived. Aristi-Zabal and Aragon pleaded guilty last year and were sentenced to 60 months in prison as part of a plea deal.

This conviction now adding to concerns about corruption within local law enforcement agencies.

As we await sentencing.
