NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A former works minister is blaming the current administration for the rapid growth of shantytowns in recent years.

Desmond Bannister tells Our News government has a small window to move, as he predicts more court action is coming to block the demolition of the illegal structures.

Bannister, who had ministerial overview under the Minnis-led government, said they left a plan in place.

Following hurricane Dorian, the former government cleared the land once known as The Mudd, the Pigeon Pea, and Sand Banks in Abaco.

But it’s a different cry from Immigration Minister Keith Bell, who last year placed the shocking growth of an Abaco shantytown at the feet of the former administration.

It’s been said The Farm grew by around 200 acres since Dorian.

In February, the injunction blocking the demolition of shantytowns was lifted.

Since then, eviction notices were distributed and government is now moving to demolish structures as a group files an appeal.
