NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A  Bahamian man who’s wanted in the United States for human smuggling briefly escaped lawful custody last Thursday.

Vandrick Smith is fighting extradition to Florida for his alleged role in a 2022 smuggling operation that resulted in the deaths of five migrants.

Smith was remanded to prison on March 6, pending an extradition hearing.

On March 28, Smith appeared before a magistrate for an unrelated gun possession case.

After the matter was adjourned, Smith escaped from the police bus that was taking him back to prison.

He was captured following a short chase in the Wulff Road area. Smith pleaded guilty to escape at his arraignment before Magistrate Algernon Allen Jr, who handed him a four-month sentence.
