NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Local tennis players took to the court to continue their philanthropic efforts with the Baha Mar cup.

Justin Roberts, Michael Major Jr and Jacobi Bain joined tennis legend Mark Knowles for a community outreach effort at the fifth edition of the event.

In addition to the pro-am, this year’s event concluded with a free children’s clinic at the John McEnroe Tennis Center.

The clinic featured instruction, games, and the opportunity to learn from both the visiting and local players.

Roberts is the highest ranked Bahamian player and most recently won the 25k PTT Boca Raton title in October.

Major was an All Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference selection in his sophomore season with the Howard Bison.

Sailing

The legacy of a Bahamian sailing legend lives on through a junior regatta named in his honor.

The 11th Annual Cecil Cooke Junior Regatta presented by Subway – featured 30 sailors competing in four divisions over the weekend at Montague.

In the ILCA 6 Division – Eliza Denning of Lyford Cay Sailing Club finished first overall while teammate John Alexiou  won the ILCA 4 Division.

Michael Knowles of the Bahamas National Sailing School finished first in the optimist championship fleet, teammate James Hunnicutt was first in the optimist green fleet, and Aiden Sumner won the sunfish award.

Cooke competed at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where he won a gold medal in the star class, alongside  Sir Durward Knowles.

Boxing

Bahamian boxers highlighted the undercard of champion spirit’s Bahamas fight night.

Carl Hield and Rashield Williams thrilled the home crowd with wins in their respective bouts Saturday night at the Baha Mar Convention Center.

Hield successfully defended the WBA Fede Caribe super welterweight title and improved to 9-0 with a knockout win over Edwin Gamboa of Panama.

It was Hield’s first pro bout in The Bahamas after staging the previous eight in Colombia.

Welterweight Rashield Williams improved to 12-3 with a second round TKO over American Jose Belloso.

Bahamas fight night marked the first world championship fight in The Bahamas in over 43 years, since the legendary bout between Muhammad Ali and Trevor Berbick in 1981.

In the main event Kevin Sadjo of France knocked out Argentina’s Diego Chaves in the fourth round. Sadjo is ranked number six at super-middleweight by the WBO, IBF and WBC.

Baseball

Year seven of the Don’t Blink Home Run Derby in Paradise saw the event continue its expansion.

Event organizers Todd Isaacs Jr. and Lucius Fox Jr. said the celebration of baseball and The Bahamas continues to reach new levels of excitement and expand its reach.

More events were added to the schedule in recent years and Fox said he looks for that growth to continue.
