NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Days after a fire destroyed Goldie’s Conch House and several other stalls at Arawak Cay, the conch king now says he’s focused on rebuilding, but he’s not doing it alone.

He has the full support of his team of employees, who say they will stand by their boss.

Kirkwood “Goldie” Evans was not in New Providence when his business of 36 years went up in flames last week Sunday.

When he got back earlier this week, he was devastated by the damage.

Employees who were there when it happened relived the experience.

Janell Kemp – Employee, Goldie’s Conch House

“Well, I was actually supposed to work that morning. It was devastating to watch my bread and butter just burn standing there, and me hopeless, can’t do anything, so that’s a great devastation to myself and my colleagues.”

Shavonia – Employee, Goldies Conch House

When I heard the news, we came out here, me and my friend Candy watched the flames. It was really rough. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

Prime Minister Philip Davis visited the scene and committed to assisting vendors in rebuilding.

Goldie said he is expecting the government’s assistance, but assures he will go on without it.

Employees who weren’t at work but heard of the disaster came running to see the damage first hand.

Ashley Dean – Employee, Goldies Conch House

“Honestly, from someone told me about it, I was kinda like in disbelief, and to come out here and to really see what’s going on. We here now, but it still feels like I’m in disbelief.”

As for the next step, the group says they will stick with their boss.

They have also organized avenues for both international and locals to support the building efforts.

Marjorie Gibson – Employee, Goldie’s Conch House

“I’m standing with my boss, best boss. We’ve been through it, and we will come out of this on the other side bigger and better.”
