USA – Republicans were on the cusp of the retaking control of the House late Monday.

The party needs 218 votes to secure a majority as the path narrows for Democrats to keep control.

The Democrats already have a majority in the Senate, securing 50 seats with a runoff in Georgia next month, which could give the Democrats one more seat.

The GOP came into this election needing a net gain of five seats in the House.

While a House majority could give conservatives leverage to spur a flurry of investigations, the slim advantage will pose immediate challenges for GOP leaders and complicate the party’s ability to govern.
