GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Leaders from the Grand Bahamian faith community are adding their voices to the conversations around new marijuana laws. They say they’re concerned there may not be enough local data, and that loopholes may lead to improper use.

That’s president of the Grand Bahama Christian Council, Reverend Kenneth Lewis, joined by other Grand Bahamian faith leaders with serious concerns about the potential changes to marijuana legislation.

The bills will remove cannabis from the list of dangerous drugs and allow for the expungement of records for individuals convicted of possession of 30 grams or less of marijuana.

They also allow for application to the authority for a religious organization license to distribute to its members as a sacrament. This aspect is something these Christian leaders find concerning.

Many of them also call for studies to be done locally instead of using international data to reflect potential Bahamian outcomes.
