NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A hit and run driver who mowed down a pedestrian as he walked to work has been jailed for three years and six months.

Twenty-five-year Altamease Rolle, a self employed nail technician, learned her fate months after pleading guilty to vehicular manslaughter in the February 14, 2022 death of Sandy Rolle.

She faced a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment.

He was walking to work on John F Kennedy Drive when Rolle, who was driving and unlicensed and uninsured car, knocked him down and failed to stop.

She also did not have a valid driver’s license.

Rolle didn’t immediately report the accident  to police, and she didn’t come forward until February 17.

In passing sentence, Justice Gregory Hilton said Mr Rolle might have survived if had received immediate medical attention.

Justice Hilton said, “It is my expectation that the convict will learn from this experience and that other road users will take heed to the effects of dangerous driving and the impact it can have on their lives and the lives of others.”

Hilton said that given the circumstances of the case, a sentence of five years’ imprisonment was warranted.

However, he reduced the sentence by one-third because of her early guilty plea.

Ms Rolle also has to pay compensation to the deceased’s estate in the amount of $20,000 by  August 31, 2027.The sentence takes effect from today because Rolle was allowed to remain on bail following her guilty plea on May 15.
