NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On November 5th, the country’s Governor General Dame Cynthia Pratt will be celebrating her 80th birthday. To commemorate the milestone, there are several events being hosted in the upcoming week beginning with a service of Thanksgiving.

The sanctuary of New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church was filled with relatives of Dame Cynthia Pratt, dignitaries, government officials, and congregants for Sunday morning’s service.

Under the theme “Eight Decades of a National Treasure,” former Prime Minister Perry Christie delivered remarks, including moments of reflection of the day they first met.

Perry Christie – Former Prime Minister
“My relationship with her began when this young nurse walked into my office I had just become the Minister of Health in 1977 so I think it must of been 78 or 79 she came into my office and she said that Minister Livingston Coakley had agreed that she can transfer out of the Ministry of Health and she only needed my permission.”

“She brought a special spirit into the cabinet that I had the responsibility of leading and in her capacity as the Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy leader of our party a special spirit to our nation.”

Echoing the sentiments of Christie, leader of the opposition, Michael Pintard described the Governor General as an inspiration for many Bahamians, including himself. He says she left her mark in the hearts of many due to her love for national development.

Michael Pintard – Leader, Free National Movement
“Your life tells lessons it tells lessons of a person who though not materially powerful had a powerful conviction that every single Bahamian deserved an opportunity and you competed with Ministry of Education in providing scholarships for Bahamians to go off to school and inspiring other go chairs and others who had it within their means to create opportunities for our young people.”

The week of events include courtesy calls, a prayer, a birthday reception and on Thursday, a gospel explosion.
