How The Bahamas Is Helping Haiti
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas has pledged to provide around 150 troops to support efforts to stabilize Haiti, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell.
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas has pledged to provide around 150 troops to support efforts to stabilize Haiti, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell.
Mitchell tells reporters there is a need for support of the Haitian national police, and efforts have been made to canvass countries that are able to help.
He adds that Canadians and Americans will provide equipment, funding and logistics for such an effort.
Mitchell says he is awaiting the outcome of a meeting between United States President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Ottawa, then he will advise Prime Minister Davis on the way forward.
The Bahamas has pledged 150 troops, in rotations of about 50, and Mitchell said training has already taken place. However, he added, “it looks like 5000 people will be needed on the ground, with about 1400 support people.”
CARICOM has noted that a general election has to be held in Haiti, as part of plans to stabilize the country.
