NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A former senior House of Assembly staffer says there should have been more consultation on the recently passed parliamentary services bill.

The bill was passed july 26th.

While he is happy it has passed, the former clerk Maurice Tynes believes it could have benefitted from better consultation.

The bill establishes an autonomous body, independent of the executive branch of government and the civil service. It places the responsibility for parliamentary service under the control and management of the parliamentary service commission.

Prime Minister Philip Davis said the bill will transcend party lines and administrations.

Meanwhile, Tynes says while the bill may not impact the independence of the speaker, it will give the appearance the parliament has control of its business.
