NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Officials in San Salvador say they’re ready if Hurricane Erin brings serious impacts.

The first Atlantic hurricane of the season is tracking our way, and forecasters are warning of possible flooding and landslides for islands in its path.

It’s not expected to hit The Bahamas head-on, but our southern islands could still feel the effects.

Chief Councilor Renard Storr says they’ve been ready for months:

“We’re continuing to watch it…we did inspection of the shelters earlier in the year, so we didn’t wait till the last minute…if we need to activate we are ready to go, we have generators prepared,” he said.

Last year when we visited San Salvador, we toured key public spaces like the administrator’s office, the clinic, and the local high school.

They’re not expected to take major damage this time, but Storr says they’re still prepared.

Being so far from Nassau, the island relies heavily on shipments by sea, and Storr says they’re stocked up.

“Well the boat is in now that’s the good thing about that…so we have food supply,” he said.

San Salvador has weathered its share of storms, from Floyd in 1999, to Frances in 2004, Irene in 2011, and Joaquin in 2015 which passed directly overhead, bringing heavy damage and storm surge flooding.

Storr says that history is why residents need to stay alert.

“Just be prepared even if we don’t have to activate the shelters and stuff we’ll pay close attention to the radio and stuff…,in the event we need to activate the shelters…,” he said.
