NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Immigration Minister Keith Bell is coming to the defense after government was criticized in the United States Department of State’s 2022 Human Rights report on The Bahamas for the handling and amount of statelessness within country.

“The government made little progress in advancing legislation to address statelessness,” according to the U.S. Department of State’s 2022 Human Rights report on The Bahamas.

Wait periods associated with citizenship applications were also criticized in the report but Immigration Minister Keith Bell, says there’s good reason for the length of the process.

Another hot topic of late referenced in the report – eviction notices in informal settlements.

Bell says there is a plan in place post-demolitions.

As for those currently unhappy with the way the laws surrounding citizenship and nationality, Bell says these laws are back under the microscope, and seeking improvement.
