Inside The B.D.O.C.S Female Campus

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas Department of Correctional Services (BDOCS) in Fox Hill, currently averaging around 1,400 inmates, 41 of them within the female campus. Our News team spoke exclusively to two female inmates who share what life has been like behind bars.

Twenty-six-year-old Ernesta Butler has been incarcerated for three years, after being convicted of attempted murder. Butler says if she could take that moment back, she most definitely would.

She says being away from her children is one of the most challenging parts of being behind bars.

Butler is expected to be released in 2023.

Forty-five-year-old Shameka Gibbs is anticipating a 2024 release date. Both women share what they most look forward to upon release.

They share their advice to others about avoiding a life in prison.
