NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Imagine being entrusted to speak for thousands of students.

At the University of The Bahamas, that responsibility falls to Student Trustee Isaac Barr, who serves on the University of The Board of Trustees.

His journey, went from student ambassador to Mister UB and now student trustee.

“It’s extremely important because in that capacity you are the voice for the students amongst all of the other entities that make up the university. It’s something that I am so proud of, because the student trustee is an elected position by the students…”

Believing campus life should be about more than academics, student leader Tristan Higgs helped foster a club called Lounge Out.

“So it became from just two of us to ten to thirty to fifty, to one hundred people to one hundred fifty…..then next thing you know lets just start a club, lets make it official, so we started a club…It became from just wanting to just enjoy campus life to just making campus life enjoyable for everyone you meet.”

Also, leadership also means building connections.

So, for student ambassador Orlandria Pinder, her role in the International and Family Island Student Association allows her to share her island pride.

“I’m a proud member of the International and Family Island Student Association which allows us to connect with our fellow family islanders and of course I’m from the wonderful island of Eleuthera, so I get to share our wonderful stories from there, connect with others from different countries and share our cultures.”

For student ambassador Tamia Hamilton, leadership has been about more than service. It’s also been about personal growth.

Meanwhile, alumna Radiyah Finlayson says UB became a place of transformation for her.

“To have been given that opportunity to give back in the same way that was given into me. So the seeds that were sewn into me, I’m able to now, sow into to other people, and I’m not speaking to them from a hypothetical point of view…”
