NASSAU, BAHAMAS – From the classroom to sports, UB Mingoes are turning athletic talent into national pride.

Student-athletes are representing The Bahamas on the world stage, while putting a spotlight on the University of The Bahamas’ athletic programs.

“I think it’s the highest level of pride, you know we go away for UB and we play, you know it doesn’t feel like your playing for the University it feels like your playing for The Bahamas.”

That passion is at the heart of UB Athletics, a pride that extends beyond the field and continues to drive the program forward.

With 120 student‑athletes across 10 varsity teams, supported by medical coverage, meal plans, and tutoring, the program is built to help them succeed.

One person helping lead that charge is UB Men’s Soccer Head Coach Alex Thompson, a UB alumnus himself.

Thompson now guides a new generation of student-athletes through many of the same challenges he once faced.

“I can resonate with a lot of the players. A lot of the stresses that they go through as a student athlete, locally. There’s not much that they can speak on that I haven’t experienced…”

Thompson’s experience has shaped his approach, pushing his athletes to excel, while reminding them to lean on the community built around them.

Meanwhile, UB Women’s Volleyball senior starter Zaria Rose says the program has given her the space to grow, with guidance and support always close at hand.

“Its given me a safe place to learn. Safe place to expand. I never feel pressured or that I need to accomplish something out of my timeline. I’ve been here for a couple years now, and my coach just allowed me to take it step by step…”

Rose says the guidance and training she received through UB Athletics have helped shape her as an athlete, allowing her to represent both UB and The Bahamas, turning those lessons into confidence on the national stage.

“When I got the opportunity to try out for the national team, the 1st year, I was injured, so I had to watch and, just learn, and I was a little disappointed…But just seeing the growth and how much better people are, it just puts into perspective, how much the sideline could be a great weapon…”
