Island Basketball League Off To a Strong Start

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Island Basketball League started late last year with the ambitious plan to re-energize the local basketball scene, and so far the results are promising.

In a statement earlier this week, the league confirms that 95 boys and girls are now enrolled with players from age groups as young as K-4, and going all the way up to ninth grade.

It was started with the goal of giving young aspiring athletes the chance to learn and play organized basketball in a safe, supportive environment that builds confidence, and teaches life lessons.

League founder and former college basketball player, Jurelle Mullings, says basketball gave her generation so many opportunities growing up, and that she wants to pay it forward.

The league will be on a bye week next week, but, when it returns, they will go straight to spring playoffs.

Registration for spring division begins March 18th and they start up again in April.

BYFFL Hosting Girls Tryouts

The Bahamas Youth Flag Football League (BYFFL) announced earlier this week that it is holding tryouts exclusively for girls ages 14-17.

The tryouts, which will be held at the field by the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium on Tuesdays and Thursdays, will allow girls to learn the sport in a supportive, motivational environment.

It also gives them a chance to join the BYFLL travel teams, which frequently play in tournaments abroad.

Women and girls’ flag football is one of the fastest growing sports in the region, and 40 colleges have all adopted it, with University of Nebraska becoming the first Power 4 School to adopt the game as a varsity sport, and more big schools are anticipated to follow.

They BYFFL players you see today, may very well be in the next generation of Bahamian college athletes.
