NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Women’s groups and advocates voicing their concerns to Social Services Minister Obie Wilchcombe following the passing of the Protection Against Violence Bill.

President of Women United Bahamas, Prodesta Moore speaking to media following the closed meeting saying two weeks ago, they met with Wilchcombe expressing their concerns. She says coming out of the meeting today, they are hopeful and optimistic.

The women’s organizations and advocates released a number of recommendations to the Protection Against Violence Bill. Women United Vice President Lisa Bostwick-Dean spoke to some of these recommendations, including financing and aid.

Social Services Minister Obie Wilchcombe calling today’s meeting productive.

Among the group meeting with the minister was Bahamas Union of Teachers President and Bahamas National Alliance Trade Union Congress President Belinda Wilson, who did not mince words saying today’s meeting is a “slap in the face” to women in the country.

To that Wilchcombe responded this way, “We were of the view that we had done the necessary consultations.”
