It’s Hurricane Season Are you Ready?

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Bahamians are preparing for Hurricane Erin, the first named storm of the 2025 season, amid concerns the country is still underprepared for another major hurricane.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As the peak of hurricane season hits, forecasters are closely tracking the first named storm of 2025, Hurricane Erin, and its potential impact.

While some Bahamians say they are prepared, others are still taking precautions against a backdrop of concern that the country may not be fully ready for another major storm.

Residents like Simon and Walter Rolle say they’ve already secured their homes.

Simon – Resident:
“I got my storm shutters and everything put up. I have water, light, and equipment ready.”

Walter Rolle – Resident:
“I have all the shutters for my house ready for whenever I need them.”

Others, like Herbert and Ashley, are still making preparations.

Herbert – Resident:
“I’m going to get some canned goods, pay bills if possible, and just try to fight it out.”

Ashley – Resident:
“I’ll stock up on candles, flashlights, canned goods, and water. Make sure my house is set.”

Erin strengthened into a hurricane early Friday, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, making it a Category 1 storm. Forecasters are warning of heavy rainfall and dangerous surf and rip currents across the Caribbean and in Miami.

Cherilyn Munnings – Resident:
“I believe through the grace of God it won’t make a turn toward us. People in Abaco and Grand Bahama have been through so much and are still trying to regroup.”

The last major storm, Hurricane Dorian in 2019, devastated Abaco and Grand Bahama, causing an estimated $3.4 billion in damage. Nearly six years later, many Bahamians feel the country has not done enough to prepare for the next major hurricane.

Herbert – Resident:
“The government needs to tighten up and make preparations for seniors and others—it’s rough for us.”

Cherilyn Munnings – Resident:
“With the population here in Nassau, I don’t know if we have enough stable, sturdy hurricane shelters.”

Simon – Resident:
“The best thing is to be prepared. If you’re not, you’re going to get hit.”

Cherilyn Munnings – Resident:
“Connect with God, and then do what you can to help yourself. God helps those who help themselves.”
