JAPAN – Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has dissolved the lower house of parliament, setting the stage for a snap national election on February 8.

The move triggers a vote for all 460 seats and Marks Takaichi’s first electoral test since becoming Japan’s first female premier in October.

Earlier this week, Takaichi pledged to suspend an 8% tax on food for two years, despite concerns over Japan’s strained public finances.

Formal campaigning begins January 27, with Takaichi set to be confirmed as prime minister if her Liberal Democratic Party and the Japan Innovation Party secure a majority in parliament.
