PARAGUAY – A major milestone for Bahamian judo and rising judoka Xavion Johnson at the Junior Pan Am Games.
Johnson delivered a series of standout performances in Asunción, Paraguay, and clinched a bronze medal in the men’s – 66 kilogram category.
From the start, Johnson was poised for a run at the medal podium and defeated Mexico’s Ian Kenner Aguirre Ramirez in the quarterfinal.
In the semifinal he lost to Brazil’s Bruno Nóbrega and but rebounded in the bronze medal match to take the Peru’s Mateo Condor.
To place Johnson’s accomplishment into historical context, it was the highest international medal for a Bahamian judoka and just the second medal ever for Team Bahamas at the Junior Pan America.
Johnson adds to his international resume which most recently includes a fifth place finish at the cadet and Junior Pan American Cups.
Swimming
Judo has been the highlight thus far, but competition is underway Team Bahamas in other disciplines at the Junior Pan American games in Paraguay.
In the men’s 4×100 meter freestyle relay, the team of Lamar Taylor, Emmanuel Gadson, Nigel Forbes, and Marvin Johnson finished 6th overall in a new national record time – 3:24.86.
They finished third in their heat in 3:27.33 to qualify as the sixth fastest time.
Also in the pool, Elyse Wood finished 5th in the ‘B’ final of the 100m breast in 1:14.16 secs.
In the men’s 100 breast, Gadson was also 5th in the ‘b’ final in 1:04.23 secs.
In archery, Leron Rolle made history for The Bahamas, and was in 13th position in the men’s individual compound with a score of 615.
Cyclist Kami Roach finished 19th in the 26.6 kilometer (km) individual time trial in 49:38.66 seconds.
Team Bahamas includes 15 athletes in six disciplines, including athletics and sailing.
Across the games as a whole, more than 4,200 young athletes from 41 countries are battling it out across 28 sports and 43 disciplines.
NFL
Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Denzel Daxon began his sophomore season and made an immediate impression as the preseason got underway.
In the Cowboys’ preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams, Daxon recorded the Cowboys only sack of the game in their 31-21 loss to the Rams.
Dallas continues their preseason schedule Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens at 7pm.
Daxon played college football at the University of Illinois and after going unselected in the 2024 NFL draft, he signed with the Cowboys, receiving an exemption as an international player.
Minor League Baseball
It hasn’t been a seamless transition to AAA for Kristian Robinson, but the wait on the call looks promising.
Since getting the call up to Triple A, from the Amarillo Sod Poodles in late July the Arizona Diamondbacks prospect has played 12 games with the Reno Aces.
He’s hitting .217 batting average with one home run, two stolen and three RBIs leading to a .715 ops.
