NEW YORK – The most decorated player in Bahamian basketball added even more hardware to her trophy case. 

The New York Liberty announced that star center Jonquel Jones continues to add to her legacy after being named to both the All-WNBA First Team and the All-Defensive Team for the 2025 season. 

This season Jones is averaging 13.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and  43.7 percent from beyond the arc, ranked third in the league. 

She remains the anchor for a Liberty team that is currently second in the Eastern Conference standings entering tonight’s matchup against the Washington mystics at 25-17.

With Jones leading the way on both ends of the floor, the Liberty are poised to make another deep playoff run in search of back-to-back titles.

And if you didn’t believe she’s one of the most decorated players we’ve ever seen, that Hall of Fame resume includes the 2021 league MVP, 2024 WNBA Champion and finals MVP, five time All-Star selection, six All-WNBA and five All-Defensive honors, the 2017 Most Improved Player award, 2018 Sixth Woman of the Year, 2023 Commissioner’s Cup Champion and MVP, has led the league in rebounds three times, led in block shots once and is currently ranked eighth all time in double doubles. 

UB Athletics

Cross country is up first on the UB athletic calendar and the Mingoes took to the road to get the year started. 

The University of The Bahamas athletics kicked off this year’s competition with the two cross country teams in action. 

At the Keiser University Flagship Invitational, the mens team scored 185 points to take seventh place while the women competed individually and not in the team segment. 

First up on the men’s side, Lhevinne Joseph had the best time on the 5k course in 18 minutes and one tenth second – 38th out of 72 competitors.

Jackson Ozias was just about 2 seconds behind him at 18:02.00 and was 39th. 

Kenold Jean was third fastest for ub at 18:16.40 seconds for 40th overall.

Mingoes newcomer Devilus Culmer was fourth for UB in 18.22.40 seconds and rounding out the team was another newcomer Jason Ferguson with a time of 20:43.10 seconds 

On the women’s side, UB cross country newcomer Bernechia Nelson lead the team at the with a 25.00.7 finish in the women’s 5k event. 

Najihah Mortimer was second in 26:03.40 seconds. 

Sienna Mackey was the third fastest with at time of 27:40.70 seconds and Marquell Newbold was fourth in 29:00.50 seconds. 

Surfing

Bahamian surfers hit the waves this weekend as competition got underway at the 2025 isa world surfing games in Surf City, el Salvador. 

The team includes Joey Gale, Christopher Albury, Luke Prosa, and Lili Wagner.

Wagner, the first Bahamian woman to compete internationally since 2009, made her debut in round one of the women’s heats where she finished fourth.

In the repechage round, Wagner was fourth in her heat 1.87 points.

Gale and Prosa also finished fourth in their opening heats and move on to repechage. 

Earlier today Gale was third in repechage heat 38 with 2.64 points and Prosa was third in heat 42 with 3.37 points. 

The ISA World Surfing games run through September 14.
