Judge Deciding If Officer Accused Of Helping Smugglers Will Present Case

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A policeman accused of helping drug traffickers will learn on July 30 whether he has to present a defense to the charges.

Senior Magistrate Shaka Serville is considering no-case submissions made on behalf of ASP Sonny Miller, the former head officer on Acklins.

Prosecutors have accused Miller of helping two Colombian smugglers offload a plane laden with cocaine and marijuana on June 9, 2022.

The DEA and DEU seized 181 pounds of cocaine, valued at $1.4 million, and 31 pounds of marijuana, worth $34,000 from the plane.

Smugglers Cristhian Aristizabal and Cristhian Aragon claimed that Miller pulled his gun on them and ordered them to the ground when he saw the DEA’s helicopter.

Defense lawyer Bjorn Ferguson asked the court to reject their evidence as it was “self-serving and unreliable.”

Both men cut deals with the prosecution to reduce their five-year sentences in exchange for their testimony against Miller.
